A family emergency plan should be short enough that people remember it. Start with five decisions and write them on one page.
1. How to reach each other
List phone numbers, messaging apps and an out-of-area contact if appropriate. Keep a printed copy in case phones are unavailable.
2. Where to meet
Choose one nearby meeting point and one farther meeting point. Make sure children or dependants understand the difference.
3. Who needs extra help
Consider children, older relatives, disabled household members, pets and neighbours who may need support.
4. What to take
Decide where documents, medicines, keys, glasses, chargers and basic supplies are kept.
5. Which official sources to follow
Identify local alerts, municipal pages, public broadcasters or emergency apps relevant to your location.
Review the plan when school, work, health or housing details change.
